NEW
HAVEN — An unlikely candidate has entered
the 2006 race for governor.
Kevin Miner, a 22-year-old
senior at Southern Connecticut State University,
who is editor-in-chief of the college newspaper
and former president of the college Democrats,
filed a candidate committee for governor.
He joins three other Democrats — New Haven
Mayor John DeStefano Jr., Secretary of the
State Susan Bysiewicz and Stamford Mayor Dannel
P. Malloy — in pursuit of their party’s nomination
for governor.
Miner admits he is a long shot for governor
but insists his candidacy is not a stunt.
"I looked at the declared candidates, and
I don’t think any of them are offering a vision
that’s good for Connecticut," said Miner,
who has never sought, or held, elected office.
Miner said his platform will center on providing
affordable health care and housing to all
state residents.
"I don’t have money; I don’t have a network
of organizers, but I do have a message," Miner
said.
Miner filed for candidacy using a B-4 form,
which prohibits him from raising or spending
more than $1,000 on the campaign.
Miner said he is prepared to amend his campaign
filing to accept monetary donations if his
campaign gains momentum. So far, Miner has
only a press secretary and few bumper stickers.
"We’re going to keep it small," he said.
A native of Wethersfield, Miner earned an
associate’s degree from Mitchell College in
New London in 2003. He is now a English major
at Southern.
Nancy Staniewicz, elections officer with the
secretary of the state’s office, said that
historically, few B-4 candidates have ever
made it on the November ballot.
Unless Miner is the Democratic nominee, he
will need 7,500 signatures to mount a primary,
Staniewicz said.
Staniewicz said she’s never heard of a college
student running for governor in Connecticut.
"There have been younger candidates for state
representative," she said.
Republican Alexander Kanevsky and Joel Schweidel,
an independent from Norwich, have also filed
candidate committees for governor.
